We have noticed an increase in the number of websites that are being hacked since the start of 2020.
Website hacking comes in many forms and in most cases is not even noticeable. So far this year the following methods have been used in a number of WordPress based websites that we have fixed.
- Malicious code is inserted into the website files so when you click on the site from Google Search, a page comes up showing arbitary content and not your website. We needed to reload all the wordpress files, plugins and theme files and install a security plugin to prevent this from happening in the future.
- Another site we noticed that the website volume traffic had jumped to over 6GB per day. Further investigation we picked up there was over 32,000 users that had been created that created over 137,000 comments. There was no malicious code found. We locked this site down by adding ReCaptcha to the comments, disabled “Allow Anonymous Users to be created” and installed a security plugin
